On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, the St. John’s University Theta
Chapter of the Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE) - International
Economics Honor Society hosted its Fiftieth Annual Induction
Ceremony on the Queens Campus, recognizing seven graduate and eight
undergraduate students.
Students honored included Doreen Attikesse, Naresa T. Bhola,
Patrick Bogusch, Michael Biesiadecki, Sung Ho Byun, Gregory S.
Choi, John Anthony Foglio, Gurjeet Kaur, Christian Thomas Kelly,
Raias Anthony Khan, Kristin M. Liberto, Nikos Nicolaou, Ellen C.
Oswald, Elisa Sciortino and Yung-Lan Wang.
The Society also inducted Dr. Ward McCarthy and Dr. M.E. Ellis as
the evening’s professional and faculty honorees,
respectively.

Dr. McCarthy, managing director and chief financial economist for
the Fixed Income Division of Jefferies and Co. discussed the
Federal Reserve and the stance of its current monetary policy; the
new credit and liquidity facilities that the Fed opened to deal
with the economic and financial crisis of 2007-2010; the
effectiveness of monetary policy and the new facilities in
preventing another Great Depression; and the current state of the
economy and where the Fed might go from here during his keynote
speech.
He is responsible for the Jefferies U.S. economic, Federal Reserve,
Treasury, and federal budget outlook and analysis. He publishes the
weekly Jefferies "Economic and Bond Market Insight" and contributes
to the Jefferies "Global Fixed Income Monthly."

Dr. Ellis is currently an associate professor of economics and
finance in the Tobin College of Business. She researches in the
fields of ethics, financial engineering, investment banking, and
signaling through seasoned equity issues and dividend
announcements. She has presented her research at regional, national
and international professional association meetings, has published
in such prestigious scholarly journals as Financial Management,
Financial Analysts Journal, and Journal of Portfolio Management,
and has co-authored two books on the investment banking
industry.
In addition, Christian D’aversa, Cristian Oancea, Stalin Rodriguez,
and Thomas Ziegelbauer were presented with certificates and
recognized for advancing to the regional semi-finals of the Federal
Reserve College FED Challenge in November 2011. Dr. Joyce Furfero,
associate professor of economics and finance, served as moderator,
welcoming honorees and guests.

Omicron Delta Epsilon is one of the world's largest academic honor
societies. Its objectives are recognition of scholastic attainment
and the honoring of outstanding achievements in economics; the
establishment of closer ties between students and faculty in
economics within colleges and universities, and among colleges and
universities; the publication of its official journal, The American
Economist, and sponsoring of panels at professional meetings as
well as the Irving Fisher and Frank W. Taussig competitions.
